3D software creates image in the computer. It is not the real world. So, it can do things we can’t, like link a color as part of a material to multiple objects. Unlike paint in the real world, in Blender a color is not really “on” an object, it is part of a material linked to the object. A single material can be linked to many objects or their structure a called a Mesh. So, change the color of one and they all change if they share the same material. Objects or Meshes which share a material are reffered to “Users” of that material. Grasping these concepts will get you on the right track to working with materials in Blender.
